Office of Safe Environment:
Keeping Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Adults SafeThe Office of Safe Environment at the Diocese of Madison is the "umbrella" department which manages all Safe Environment Requirements, Documentation, and Training Sessions. The training includes the VIRTUS® program "Protecting God’s Children® for Adults" for all clerics (bishops, priests, and deacons) incardinated in the Diocese of Madison; all diocesan clerics not incardinated in the Diocese of Madison but serving in any capacity here; all seminarians and deacon candidates affiliated with the Diocese of Madison; and for religious and lay men and women employed by, stably volunteering with, or having any contact with minors in the Diocese of Madison, its parishes, schools, institutions, offices, or programs, and the "Circle of Grace" children's program for those children in our schools and parishes. These programs offer instruction in self-protection and protection of children, young people, and vulnerable adults in the Diocese of Madison.
Bishop's DecreeOffice of Safe Environment, established in 2004, the Diocesan Safe Environment Program is charged with working with diocesan offices and institutions, parishes, and schools to create and maintain safe environments for all. This office:
- Distributes to parishes and offices the Diocese of Madison Safe Environment and Allegation Response Policy, Code of Conduct, Anti-Harassment Policy, Social Media Policy, and the Policy on the Human Person.
- Coordinates the educational measures required by the Diocese of Madison policy and the USCCB Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.
- Maintains records of receipt of returned "Statement of Receipt and Agreement" forms, background check authorizations and results, and VIRTUS™ training.
- Conducts background checks on all clerics (bishops, priests, and deacons) incardinated in the Diocese of Madison; to all diocesan clerics not incardinated in the Diocese of Madison but serving in any capacity here; to all seminarians and deacon candidates affiliated with the Diocese of Madison; and to religious and lay men and women employed by, stably volunteering with, or having any contact with minors in the Diocese of Madison, its parishes, schools, institutions, offices, or programs.

All background check records are kept confidential, accessible only to the Office of Safe Environment. -
